During her participation in the «Artist in island» program, Justine Emard explored the territory of Iki island through archeology, history and fiction. Her works create some imaginary connections with the origins of the civilization through the sea and following the mysterious lights which appear at the surface of the water. The title of her exhibition, 暁 (Akatsuki) – La Nuit des Temps, is inspired by a novel by the french writer Rene Barjavel. This science fiction story relates a French expedition in Antarctica, revealing the ruins of a 900,000 year old civilization that is more advanced than our own. In her creations, Justine Emard captures fragments of reality and connects them to create new stories.

After nightfall, we can see the res of the shing boats from the land. These lights can also be seen from the satellites, making this island one of the most brilliant points in the world.
Justine Emard wanted to use these lights as a metaphor for the Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai (百物語怪談会), a famous display in the Edo period used to invoke spirits and tell stories.
This video is one journey between day and night, the earth, the sea and the stars.
日が暮れると、陸地からは漁火(いさりび)が見える。この漁火は、人工衛星か らも観察できることから、この島は、世界で最もキラキラと光輝く場所の一つな のだ。 ジュスティーヌ・エマールは、これらの漁火を、江戸時代に百話の怪談を語り

This work is a collaboration with Goo Nakayama, a calligraphy artist, as well as with the Iki high school baseball and volleyball teams. Filmed as a performance, each boy got a kanji painted on his back and was responsible for enacting it. Goo Nakayama’s work is to approach the origins of the kanji by studying their shape. Justine Emard creates a display to engage these kanji in a dialogue together with the motion of the bodies, in order to create new meanings. The music has been made by Keiichiro Shibuya, by remixing recordings of Iki’s Gion Yamakasa matsuri and traditional japanese music.
この作品は、書道家のグゥ・ナカヤマ氏並びに、壱岐高等学校の生徒との コラボレーションである。男子生徒の背中には象徴が描かれており、生徒 は そ の 象 徴 を 演 じ る と い う 映 像 に な っ て い る 。グ ゥ ・ ナ カ ヤ マ 氏 の 作 品 は 、 漢字の形をじっくり観察することで、その文字の起源(Origin)にアプロー チするというものだ。ジュスティーヌ・エマールは、これらの象徴で、身体の 動 き を 使 い な が ら 対 話 を し 、新 た な 意 味 を 創 造 す る と い う 映 像 作 品 を 制 作した。音楽は、渋谷慶一郎氏制作による、壱岐の伝統芸能のリミックス。

This wallpaper was made from pictures she took of the ink stains on the shingboats. When a sherman kills the squid, the ink goes out and creates some beautiful but terrifying patterns. Our brain can nd some recognizable shapes in the abstract patterns*.
*Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a stimulus, usually an image or a sound, by perceiving a familiar pattern where none exists, like seeing rabbits in the moon.
